This webinar was delivered by Kirstie Ogilvie, another of our Executive Committee members. It provides an outline of the key elements to be included when reporting the results of a land contamination Human Health Risk Assessment. Kirstie explored some of the common problems encountered in such reports as well as offering suggestions on how these can be mitigated and improved.

Sarah explains the importance of agreeing both a remediation strategy and remediation scheme which should include the details of the verification checks required. Sarah also provided examples of common problems faced as well as offering suggestions as to how the situation can be improved.

Ian presents an overview of the emerging issues with per- and polyfluroalkyl substances (PFASs) as they are increasingly being discovered in drinking water above regulatory standards globally. The properties of these contaminants were described as their extreme persistence, bioaccumulation potential, mobility and toxicity are driving increased regulatory awareness. The sources of PFAS, the regrettable replacement chemistry and alternative products are described.

John provided a supplementary presentation to previous webinars on Sampling Protocols 101 and Design and Strategy. Making sure you have collected the right numbers of samples and scheduled the correct testing is imperative and is dependent on the rationale for the investigation. A generic investigation to inform Human Health or Environmental Risk Assessment will differ from a sampling strategy to determine waste classification for disposal purposes, so getting the rationale right and understanding the client requirements is key to a successful investigation.

In Sept 2020, CL:AIRE published new professional guidance on using statistics when comparing soil contamination data with a critical concentration. The new guidance is heavily influenced by 2 statements published by the ASA (American Statistical Association) in 2016 & 2019 which seek to "move to a world beyond P<0.05" and in this presentation, Nigel explains how statistics should be used to supplement practitioners judgement, not replace it.
